Samson AFB

Can anyone out there give me any information on or about a closed air base, Samson AFB, located in western New York state? My father, Robert A. Noack, was stationed there in the early 50' and my brother and I were born in the base hospital,(in 52 and 53 respectively). We have and older sister that was not born there but in New Jersey. She was 6 years old in 52 when I was born. I can not find anything about this base anywhere and now my parents are dead and my sister doesn't remember anything about it. Any help of any kind would really be appreciated. My e-mail address if either melp@lorettotel.net or my private e-mail address celinedeion@hotmail.com.

Or if anyone out there remembers my father. SMSGT Robert A. Noack, you can e-mail me also. He was also stationed at Sheppard AFBin the late 50's, then spent a year in Okinawa, Japan and in the 60's he was stationed at Offutt AFB in Bellevue Neb. until his retirement in 1967. He lived in Leoma, Tennessee until his death in 1978.

I remember going to school with Kenny Weza and Joy Savage. Please write to me if you have any info. Thanks

Unit Histories

Where would I go to get information on the decorations that were awarded to a couple of fighter squadrons from the WWII era? A friend of mine was a flight surgeon with a group that went from North Africa to China.

He got amoebic dysentary and had to leave the unit before the war ended, and never did find out how they did. I can't think of the Wing and Squadron numbers at this time, but would like to know where to look.

Have a great day.

G.I.'s in or near Wiltshire England 42-44

Were you stationed in or near Swindon, Wiltshire, England between 1942 to 1945 and did you frequent a pub called "The Beehive", Prospect Hill, and did you know my father, Stan Linnegar, the owner? He had in his possession for years a Bulova watch left to him by a G.I., either to pay for his bar tab or for safekeeping. The owner of the watch never returned for it, and my father gave it to me before he died and said I was to find the owner!!!!!! The initials on the back of the watch are engraved F.R.M. I have visions of a loving mother or girlfriend giving this watch to FRM before he left for overseas. By the way, the watch still runs.

Any info? Please call Beryl Linnegar Shepard at (916) 387-6721 or contact her at thebundyz@AOL.com. Thanks

My father was a bombardier in a B-24 in WWII. Many times he & I tried to get to an air show where they had one of these bombers but never seemed to get the chance. My father died 8 months ago and I have a strong renewed interest in seeing on of these ships up close to see and feel what my father experienced in this during his tour. I miss my father deeply and to get close to something he new about or experienced is very important to me.

PLanes to Mocambique

I just wanted to know what kind of plane it is that went to Mocambique. It looked like a Galaxy, and It was about as big as a 747. I am asking this because I live right next to the airport in Ghana, and these planes make a hell of a lot of noise when they pass over my house. I just wanted to know out of interrest whether these planes that landed and stayed at the airport in Ghana for about 3 days are the ones going to or coming from Mocambique. I also saw them loading a helicopter into it.

S.M. Sgt.

Not too terribly long ago I was in a play at Angelo Civic Theater. While there I stumbled across a duffle bag with an old style air force uniform in it. Upon closer inspection I discovered these: a name tag, a ribbon rack, a wheel cap, an old style service coat, and assorted other uniform items. In the wheel cap was an info sheet it specified: name, BAILEY, R. B. rank, S. M. SGT. Serial # FR 164-30-2040. What really caught my intrest were the ribbons, he had the Republic of Vietnam Service, with 4 stars. the Bronze Star the man was a full fledged hero his wings indicated he was an air crew member. US Military Bases in Greenland 1935-1999

Can anybody provide me with information on the above or books available.
Thanks

Barry Davidson Davidson
United Kingdom
E-mail: Christine.Davidson@tesco.net

ANSWER: Greenland Airbases

From: HCervan102@AOL.Com
Dear Barry:

I am aware of 2 bases. During WW ll, Bluie West 1 was situated on the southwest coast at the end of a long narrow fijord. There was only one way in and one way out and there was insufficient space to go-around for a second attempt to land. The runway was short with an imposing concrete wall at the end of it to guard buildings from any aircraft that might land long. As one neared the wall, big signs on either side of the runway advised. "Cut Your Switches". The other, Thule Air Base is better known. It was part of USA's Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS). A fighter squadron and Nike missiles guarded the base from air attack. And if rumors are to be believed, our only protection from ground attack was backscatter from the super powerful electronic signals emitted by the monstrous radar antennas. They would sterilize a man in a second.

In may 1952 the USAF tried to become trendy, I was a corporal at the time and it was changed to A/2C and when I became an E4 I was called A/1C with 3 stripes, as a result I do not display my honorable discharge with the pathetic A/1C shown on it. I noticed years later the USAF returned Sgt. for the 3 chevron rank, when did it return to Sgt?

Air Force Motto & Song

As a soon-to-be "Proud Air Force Mom", I would like you to list the words to the Air Force Song (Is "Song" the right term?) and the pledge or motto that they must learn...I'd like to learn them before he completes Basic Training. He goes to Lackland the end of September. Thanks and I've enjoyed surfing (excuse me, FLYING) your web-site!

(Also, my mother (died in 1998 at age 71) was in the AF during WWII ) COOL!

Tom,
My name is Jamie Sue Jones. My fathers name was James Wallace Jones. He was in the Air Force and retired a TSGT. I was born in Duluth Minn. and under Champus Insurance. I have tried several avenues to find out my birthdate and have had no luck. It is either August 25, 1960, or September 26.1960. Is there anything at all you can do to put me in touch with anyone who may be able to help me? I have SS #'s, for my father, myself, and Mom, hospital name and a birth certificate my Mom says she doesn't think is right. Anyway...anything you can suggest would be so very much appreciated.

Hi,
I am doing research into vigilance. There were a number of studies done in the 40s and 50s by USAF on this subject. The first is:'Radio operator fatigue: The effects of length and repitition of operating periods on efficiency ofperformance' by DB Lindsley USAF OSRD rep, 1944, No. 6. Also:'Experiments on vigilance: Duration of vigil and the decrement function.' by HJ Jerison. USAF WADC tech rep 1958, No. 58-369.I am also after any reports on the 'endspurt' in vigilance. Can you help me to get hold of these reports?
Many thanks

Information on how to get an Air Force Flag
As an AF Retiree and the Grandfather of a third grader I am asking how I can obtain a USAF Flag. This year her grade school started to honor all veterans on veterans day and as a person who was invited I was shocked to see that they had flags from all the branches of the service except the AF. After asking her teacher and principal about why there was no AF flag, they simply stated they can't get one. So I am asking can you put me on the right path, to get one, so that next year I will be able to present this flag for them to hang in the hallway.

Thank you,

We are a small but very patriotic church group in Enfield, North Carolina. We have an open memorial on each veteran's and memorial day. We have collected the dress uniform dolls from all branches of the service except the Air Force. We would be very interested in location one to purchase as soon as possible as our next memorial is just a couple of weeks away.

Also, we would like to know of any veterans living in our area, Halifax county, Nash county, Edgecomb county, North Carolina. We honor these fine folks at our memorials and this year we would like to give a special honor to the oldest living veteran in Eastern North Carolina. Your help in locating someone will be greatly appreciated.

Gentlemen,

I am trying to identify the squadron number and information about a particular P-51 . The plane was a P-51D and I believe it served in the European theater during WWII. The aircraft was mostly aluminum in color , however, it was olive drab on most of the fuselage, was checkerboard around the nose and had a striped spinner. The rudder was yellow and had a red horse standing on its hind legs. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Hello, my name is Tom Berry, and I've got a problem that I hope isn't unique to me. In a nut shell, I went through Basic Training in November 1979. I was in the 3711 Squadron, Flt 411. I have moved too many times to mention, and have managed to LOOSE my group Flight photo and Flight BOOK. I have attempted several times to find out if there is an archive where this photo would exist either civilian or military. "Leonard's Portraits" did the picture and claim all photos and negatives are destroyed after 90 days. They also don't recall giving the picture to anyone in a official manner. I just can't help but think that if I was the "FBI" or the "CIA", that picture would materialize in a hurry!
The only suggestion "Leonard's" had was to find someone that was in that flight with me. I also think that is a good idea. Now I can't find anywhere that has kept a list of people that went through basic at that time! One dead end after another! I just can't believe the "Air Force" doesn't know "I WENT THROUGH BASIC TRAINING IN 1979", and who else was with me! It's getting exasperating. I don't know why I don't "expect" that though, considering, I am dealing with the Government.
Anyway, can anyone there help me in any way? Either with a suggestion, or places and people I can call that might have better answers. I would GREATLY appreciate it! I would really like to have the Flight picture again. It was one of the most important things I've done in my life. Only now do I realize that, now that I'm 45, and have lost it.
I spent 8 years in the Air Force, and was a Integrated Avionics Instrumentation / Flight Controls Systems Specialist. 32677C. I have some real nice pics of Air Craft. Photography has been a hobby of mine for years. I would be glad to share them with you. Tell me what you'd like, and where to send them. I will wait for your reply.

Sincerely yours, Tom Berry.

49-B USAF Pilot's Ring

My father graduated USAF Pilot School in 1949. He got a 49-B Pilot graduation ring and lost it two days later in the San Antonio River. As a suprise, I would really love to replace that ring but all I have to go on is that the ring was made by BALFOUR somewhere in Massachussets. I have called Balfour and they do not keep molds for rings farther back than 1972. I have explored Ebay but I have had no luck there. Where would one search to find a replacement ring? Exhausting all options, a friend of my Dad's is willing to lend me his ring to have a duplicate made but will a reputable jeweler do that?

Thanks,
D. Lago

F.84 F Thunderstreak

I'm an Italian Aircraft Collector and I am very found of the aircraft " Republic F. 84 F Thunderstreak ".( but only this type of aircraft ).

I collect everything relating to this kind of airplane all around the world ( records - photographies - ejection seat and his components - books - manuals - hanbooks - drawing - video tapes ecc. ) and for fourteen years I have been reconstructing its history with USA - French - German - Belgian - Dutch -Turkish - Greek and naturally Italian Air Force.
My father was pilot of it in the Italian Air Force and flow, for about 2500 hours, with this airplane in the 6 th Aerobrigata ( Red Devils ) at Ghedi ( Brescia ) and 36 th Stormo at Gioia del Colle ( Bari ).

In this moment I have in my archives about 1800 photos of the F.84 F Thunderstreak relate to all Air Force in Europe and USA; I have all books about this airplane, one ejection seat, many instruments and other.

If you can help me with anything, please send me an e-mail.

Want Information on X-29

My grandfather was in the air force and he told me about an experimental aircraft called the X-29. He said that it had a single engine with 2 20mm machine cannons. He also said it can carry up to 8 missiles. He also said it can carry 2 aim-54 phoenix missiles 2 aim-7 sparrow missiles and 4 aim-9 sidewinder missiles. My grandfather also said the top speed of this jet was about the same as a navy F-14 Tomcat. Well, i was just wondering if this information was true sir.

Missions NW ITALY 1944-45. Historical researches.

I take the liberty of referring to you in the hope of obtaining some information about the fighter crash occurred during the World War II very near my town Cuneo (latitude Nord 44°23, longitude East Greenwich 7° 33,) that is in the North-West of Italy and exactly to the South of Turin. The target was the Cuneo bridge. I'm not sure the plane was P 47 or P 51, but I suppose that was P 47. I know that the exact day of the loss was August 2, 1944 and that the pilot died and was missing.

I'm also very interested in the witnesses about the bombing missions in my research area that is the North-West of Italy, to the South of Turin (Cuneo, Borgo San Dalmazzo, Fossano, Mondovì, Roccavione, Savigliano,....)

I know that the air bases for the bombing missions over North of Italy were in Corsica, Fighter Group: 27th, 57th, 79th, 86th, 324th, 350th of 12th Air Force, 1944-45. My town, Cuneo, is 152 miles far (as the crow flies) from Bastia in the Corsica Isle.

For all those reply to me, I will enclose an Excel.xls file with dates and towns list and some notes about hit targets. Thank you very much for the courtesy and assistance. Ciao Sergio Costagli.

Robins AFB, Georgia

My Dad was stationed at Robins AFB, Georgia in the early 1960's. He was crew chief on the first B-52 commissioned there by SAC, the "Miss Warner Robins". My nephew is making a model B-52 to take to Dad in the nursing home for Christmas. He would like to know the tail numbers for the Miss Warner Robins, the squadron number (It was the Black Knight squadron), and any other pertinent information that would make the model look authentic. This would really mean a lot to my father. Any one out there know anything? Or could you give me a clue where to look. I'd really appreciate it.
