Inquiry about possible SAGE and NORAD person.

I have purchased a ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE FLIGHT JACKET that once belonged to a Canadian Colonel Platz. In the late 70's, he served in the United States with the 24th Air Division at Malmstrom AFB, as an instructor while on an exchange program. Owning and wearing his jacket would mean a lot more to me if I knew some of its history. Can you help?

Capt.Earl Fryer - 55th Fightergroup , 38th SQ. Mustang P-51

I'm very interested in the history of a Mustang P-51 called "Spunktown".The flyer was captain Earl Fryer of the 55 th Fighter Group, 38 th squadron. He received training at camps in Alabama and Tennessee and was later in 1943 sent to England. On the 8th of november 1944 he returned from a mission over Germany and flew over Holland, where he probably was hit by Flak or a German airplane. He crashed nearby my village and now I would like to hear anyone who knew Capt.Earl Fryer, even perhaps do have pictures of him or other planes of the 38th squadron.Captain Fryer came from Englesville. His cemetery is in Boyerstown.

Looking for F105 pilot killed in Vietnam

I am looking for information on a Pilot Major Frank Everett bennett, he was shot down on April 4, 1965, over the Tonkin gulf off the coast of Danang. He was from the 563rd tactical fighter squadron flying out of Takhli Thailand. The information I need is to confirm his body was recovered by the USS Canberra. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Looking for F-105 pilots - stationed at Takli Thailand in the months of April or May 1965,

My name is Warren Mackey, and I already have a previous e-mail on this web page looking for a F-105 pilot that was shot down over the Tonkin Gulf in Vietnam in 1965. Thank you to everyone that has responded, and gave me information, and where to get information on his identity. Unfortunately I have not been able to identify him, if there are any Air Force F-105 pilots that were stationed at Takli Thailand in the months of April or May 1965, and know of any pilots that were killed in action during that time it would be great to here from you. My Father pulled this pilot out of the ocean, he was already deceased when they got him onboard the USS Canberra. My father wants to pay recognition to this fallen pilot at the Vietnam memorial wall, and would like to know his name.

Thank you again,

Warren P. Mackey<wowcheeks@juno.com>

Ribbons and/or medals

Hello, I am a USAF veteran, honorably discharged in 1983. I had to make a copy of my DD214 for membership in a club for veterans and I noticed that I received 4 medals. I remember physically getting the good conduct medal but not the others. I know was for expert marksmanship but cannot remember what the other two were for.

The reason for the email is to find out if there is anyway I can get those medals?? I lost the Good Conduct Medal somewhere along life's way but I would like to have all the medals to give to my children when they are grown. I would be happy to pay for the cost of the medals and like I said, I can send a copy of my DD214 so you can see which ones I received. Please let me know if this is possible.

Thanks,

Old Trunk

To Whom It May Concern,

I recently attended an auction here in Ontario Canada. I purchased what I believed to be an old steamer type trunk. It was surfaced with mac tack. I have currently decided to refinish it as a coffee table. When I stripped off the mac tack, miraculously, the silver paint beneath stayed mostly in tact. I'm sure that I have misread some letters but if you could put me in contact with or feed me some information on the meanings of what I am reading or even the Major it belonged to I would greatly appreciate it.

It reads as follows: FROM RAMSTFIX AFB / APO ______ USAF
TO TRANS _____________

MC CHESNEY .W.H.I / MAJOR A0-23220
803 FULTON AVE SAN ANT 10, TEXAS

I hope there is someone out there that can help me on this quest. I would be happy for ANY correspondance about this subject

Information For School Project

Hello:

My 6th grade son would like to write a paper about his grandfather's participation in World War II. My father has told us alittle bit about the War but many details are missing. My father's name is John R. Brooke. He was a pilot and flew a B17 bomber into Germany, Bordeaux etc. He said the name of it was the "Laurel R. Roger." He believes that he was with the 8th Airforce, 10th Airwing Group... then mentioned something about the 32nd? He said he flew out of Mendosholm Airbase? It's difficult because my father doesn't live near us so we have minimal info. I would love to contact someone else who may have served with my father to help fill in some details. Can you help us?

Military 401K
Date: Mon, Mar 04 01:11 PM

Howdy,
My grandson, in Keesler for technical schooling, asked me my advice on the new military 401K program. In trying to find enough information to advise him, I contacted the nearest AFB - Offutt, which gave me a non-existent AFPC Randolph address - www.afpcrandolph.af.mil.com. And the USAF.com, Personnel Center page gave a no-longer-in-service phone number (210) 652-6141. Does anyone have any information on this program or would you please direct me to a "working" number for the Personnel Center or a web page for this data? Much obliged,

Can Anyone Help Bill Ramsdell?

Need your expertise on Aircrew Life. Support Sections and Life Support Survival Shops. Some questions for you:
1. Do all flying units have a Aircrew Life Support Element and is the
Section always under the Operations Support Group or Operations Squadron???
2. Do all Flying Wings and Airbase Wings have a Parachute/Survival/Equipment/Egress Shop or Facility????
3. Are you often linked with the Aerial Port Load Riggers or does each
Airlift Squadron have a Life Support Section???
4. Are the Life Support Sections active as an Element in all Aircrew
Survival/Egress Training Schools and under which division or Branch do they
function?? Instructors???
5. I am doing an Order of Battle for all Rigger/Aerial Delivery Units (no matter how small) in all branches of the Armed Forces. I have posted and cataloged over 550+ units but the USAF is the hardest because of the constant change.. I have all of the Aerial Port units before the 70's when
the Riggers were under the Aerial Delivery Branch and your Life Support Personnel worked out a Base or Hanger Shop as a combined Support Unit and I lost you after 19977 when the Life Support personnel were assigned to individual Squadrons. God-there must be a BUNCH of you because I have an updated squadron list and there are a BASIC LOAD OF SQUADRONS. Any help on composition assignment to separate or wing units and their relationship to the Squadron would be appreciated or a source document???

Mystery Crew
About 15 years ago I found a letter written by a man named Patrick(first name) written to his wife. It was written while he was returning from a raid over Japan.

The letter includes several names of other crewmen and I am hoping that I can find out more about the crew and what ended up happening to them. I am a history teacher and my students are on me to research the mystery as best I can. Here is the information that I was able to glean from the letter:
1. The crew was based at Tinian / 2. The letter was written at 04:02 so it must have been a night raid with incendiaries . / 3. It must have been post Iwo Jima as he describes that they are pasing over the island as he is writing.
4.The crew are as follows: Pilot Sam_____ Co-pilot Iron George_______
Radioman ___ Larkin,Crewman Knutsen, Hansen, Patrick ________ Schiffer, Galligan and Leahman. Any information would be greatly appreciated

F-86H Related Information

I'm currently writing a book about the North American F-86H Sabre. It follows my book about the C-124 Globemaster II, published in summer of 2000. I am especially interested in historical information related to the Air Guard's use of the plane, as official records relating to these units appears lacking.

WWII Veterans - The Battle of Dunkirk.

Hello. My name is Brandi Gilbertson, and I am currently attending Augusta High School, in Augusta, WI. For school, we are having a big assembly to honor WWII veterans. Each grade has been assigned a section of WWII. The Freshman Class has The Battle of Dunkirk. If you could help me find a WWII veteran that was involved in it, I would love to hear what their experience was like. And with their permission, present it to the school, and the community. Thanks.

Do you know why the U-2 spy plane is not active in the USAF? My dad said it was a very fast plane that was invented a long time ago. How come there is not many planes with bleed- turbojets? If you wanted a fast fighter it would do the job wouldn't it?

Why isn't there any more planes with the design of the F-117 Night hawk.

Airforce passout ring?

I have been left a ring in a friends will. From what I understand, it is a 1945 US Airforce Passout ring. It is quite worn but appears to have an eagle atop a column with 19 and 45 either side of the column. It also has two diagonal stripes running from top left to bottom right. It appears to be white, rose and yellow gold. Inside the ring it is stamped 10KJOSTEN and has the initials LHR. Can anybody confirm for me what this ring is please.
Many thanks.

Galaxy or Starlifter?

Hi there, I have a simple question you might be able to answer. I am currently serving with the transport division of the Danish Armed Forces, and the other day we hauled some goods for the US Navy from Aalborg to Frederikshavn (both are in Denmark). It was mainly the personal items of some Navy crew, but also included a massive 10-ton+ pressure chamber. All in all we loaded AT LEAST 40 tonnes, but probably more like 50 or 60.

My question is this: which plane was it that delivered the stuff?. My sergeant claimed that the plane was a C141b Starlifter, but as far as I know 40 tonnes is in excess of the Starlifters load capacity, and would require something like a Galaxy instead. Having seen neither of the two in real life
I have a hard time telling them apart - all I know is that the plane was absolutely gigantic, and way bigger than our own Hercules. It had the words "Air Mobility Command" written just beneath the cockpit, on the underbelly of the plane. It´s not that big a deal, but I´d like to know it anyway - call me a fact freak if you will. Hope to hear from you.

Yours

Andreas Bøttger, Denmark <serrarion@hotmail.com>

Capt. Ed Murphy

Hello..... I just bought a Time-Life book, "The Power and the Glory; An Illustrated History of the United States Military." In it appears the following (pp 115-116): "The Air Force ... would bequeath an enduring morsel of American social commentary when, in 1949, Capt. Ed Murphy, an engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio working on crash-research testing, was struck withone of the immutable insights of the age: Whatever possibly can go wrong, will."

I first read about "Murphy's Law" in the late 1950s when I would read my dad's "Astounding Science Fiction"; the letters page was filled with commentary on Murphy's Law by scientists and engineers. In later years, at the University of Minnesota and during 27 years with MnDOT as an
engineering technician, I found Capt. Murphy's insight to be one of the truest statements ever uttered about the real world. In my opinion, the man deserves a high-ranking decoration for the articulation of this "law of the perversity of inanimate matter."

Is there anyone out there who may have known Captain Murphy and can verify that it was he who made the statement? Or -- is it true that (as a Corollary to The Law says) "Murphy's Law was not propounded my Murphy, but by another man of the same name"?

Please contact: robertgwirth@usfamily.net with any relevant info, corollaries, personal
experiences with The Law, etc. Thank you very much!

Hi There:

I've been trying to be creative in my internet search for details on an air show in Atlanta this year (2002) I can't seem to get there. Can you help with contact information or dates/schedules of any known events?

P.S. I know I'm way behind the news here, but SOOOOOO delighted that we honored Bob Hope with The Spirit of Bob Hope. I can't think of a more deserving civilian. He's my favorite "American" (though he is not a native)!!! Kudos to MD and the US government for this recognition. : )

P.S.S. - Thank you for keeping our neighbors and our nation safe! Nearly 230 years and only three attacks.....what does that tell you about American commitment and integrity? Rock on!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU and GOD Bless America!

F16/Skull & Crossbones?

Hi Tom... I sometimes see F16's on TV that have a scull & crossbones painted on the tail. I have searched and searched the internet, and even called our closest airbase, Shaw AFB, to ask them. Their closest guess was that those F16's are in a squadron based in Korea, but they were not sure.

Do you know where they are stationed/located? I would really like to find some high quality photos on the internet of those F16s.

Looking for Information: On Father, Robert J. (Bob) Jones & 21st. Weather Squadron

My father's name was Robert J. (Bob) Jones. At the time of his discharge in early 1946, he was a Sgt. in the 21st. Weather Squadron, which I believe was in the 9th. Air Force. He was drafted 1943, and after basic, had school in Illinois at Chanute Field. There was also training of some sort in Miami, Fl.

Subsequently, he went overseas, initially in England, then France and Germany by the end of the war.

Any information on how to get more detailed information on his tour with the USAAF would be greatly appreciated.

One story he told me was about the C47 pilot and squadron C.O. who, being fed up with the locals in Chartres, and their attitude about Americans, made a final gesture of Yankee defiance to the local populace when the outfit moved east into Germany. It seems the town officials were very concerned about damage to their world famous twin-towered Cathedral, maintaining that vibrations from aircraft engine noise was damaging the antique structure. Additionally, it was requested that the approach, departure, and local patterns be altered to give the Cathedral a wide berth, making headaches for the guys in ops in general. It seems there was also a fear that some pilot might get carried away with "flat-hatting", victory rolls, etc., and do some damage. The story goes that this C47 jock departed by banking his aircraft into a 90 degree angle of bank while passing BETWEEN the twin Cathedral towers as a way of saying "Thanks for the French hospitality". My Dad also informed me that this exuberant pilot later became chief pilot for United Airlines. Any information on the story, the weather squadron, or my Dad would be greatly appreciated. Dad was killed in Feb. 1983, and I never had the opportunity to talk much with him about his time in the war, which he was extremely reticent about, in spite of the fact that he was a groundpounder and wasn't traumatized from any sort of combat. My attempts to find information on the 21stWeather Squadron have proved unsuccessful to this point.

B17 "Sweet Seventeen - Date: Sun, Sep 08 01:26 PM

At the start of W.W.II I was a seven year old girl living within hearing range of the AVRO Woodford Aeroplane facility, in Cheshire, England. My mother, an American from Waukegan, Illinois, USA and father, English, lived fairly close to Woodford also. (That's material enough for a book right there!).

It was a proud moment for us all when my Uncle Richard Kaymen, also of Waukegan, Illinois was stationed with the Eight Air Force in England and came to visit our house from wherever he was stationed. Unfortunately, now my parents and uncle are all dead and I am too late in getting the full
history.

I do know that he was a group navigator on the "Sweet Seventeen" B17 and he did live to made it back to the US. Deo Gratias. I don't believe a day comes to a close when I don't contemplate the
magnificent contributions made to Freedom during those dark, dark days. I now live in the US and have for a long time -- have visited Duxford and the very beautiful memorial to the US heroes who died and the planes that were lost. I thought it a very striking memorial.

My admiration for the RAF is unbounded and Mr. Churchill equally. I am looking for a source for memorabilia, such as good recreated bomber jackets, patches, enamel plane pins. I have collected some at various air museums, but have not found a bomber jacket. Has anyone any ideas? I have a Spitfire patch and Lancaster bomber patch and various other planes, but no squadron types of shoulder and chest insignia. I love your web pages, and the RAF has some terrific sites too.

Thanks for any info.

Looking for An Original '50-'60's Blue, stenciled Air Force Blanket

Good afternoon, I am looking for an original Air Force blanket that was issued in the 50s and 60s. It's the same as the green Army blanket that we all know except it's blue and has USAF stenciled on it. Some of them do not have the stenciling though. I'm in need of one that is stenciled and in good condition and not faded. If you can help me, please email me at jonima@bunt.com
Please make your subject: Air Force Blanket. Thanks!

My husband was in the Air Force from 1963 thru 1967. During that time, he was stationed at Lackland AFB, Sheppard AFB, and finally Carswell AFB. [Yes, to his surprise, he never left the state of Texas!!] During this time, there was an Air Force recruitment ad (poster) circulating which featured a close-up view of an unshaven pilot, wearing goggles, cigarette dangling from mouth etc. The caption at the bottom read: "Sleep tight; your Air Force is awake." I would like very much to obtain a print of this recruitment ad. If you know of any websites etc. that offer this item, please respond to me at pokiegump@att.net.

THANK YOU. Clint Labarthe

Furniture flights ...Spain to Germany

I was being air evac'ed from Spain to Germany ( 1969). I was watching the blue cheese box ambulances back up to the plane at Terijhon (sp?). When they loaded my stretcher, I was one of two patients on a plane load of furniture. Did anyone else experience any of this?

Date: Tue, Jan 21 04:15 PM

My Grandfather, Robert Hickle, was part of the 9th Air Force, 33rd MR and R. He was in England in '43 and went to France during the Battle of the Bulge. While he was in England he designed a dolley for moving aircraft and gliders. An article was written about this dolley in "Plane Facts"magazine. I would like to locate a copy of the magazine and get a copy of the article to give to him. Thanks for any help you can give.

Can anyone help? Date: Thu, Feb 20 09:16 AM

I'm interested in any correspondence with Maj. Jeffrey S. Tice (USAF). I requested a USAF POW bracelet during the Desert Storm operation in 1991. Maj. Tice was a POW as of 31 Jan. 1991. I'm not sure if he is retired now or not, but I would like for him or his family to have his bracelet. It would mean a lot to me to be able to return this to him. If anyone can help me with this I would be in their debt. My name is Chuck Bowlin. Thanks in advance!

Looking for: radio-operator Lawrence Jensen and gunner, Lloyd Best.

Dear Sirs!

My name is Jerker Magnusson and i live in the south of Sweden. Very close to my home an american B-17 went down on the 7th of october 1944 at approx.2:30 pm local time after have been bombing in Germany. Two of the crew survived the crash; radio-operator Lawrence Jensen and gunner Lloyd Best. I am interested in what happened two these two men. Did they survive the war? Are they alive? If not is it possible to get in contact with their relatives? What were the crews mission? (it can´t still be classified,or is it?) How many missions did the plane do?

My curiosity woke when a piece of the aircraft was found in a henhouse. I believed the farmer must have kept the piece (a door) since aluminium was extremely rare on the Swedish countryside in the nineteen forties.

Please give me some respond about these matters. USAF are welcome to come here and claim their property. Otherwise I can hold on to it on your behalf until someone of you pass by.

Yours truly, Jerker Magnusson <jerker.magnusson@alfa.telenordia.se>
