Reunion Wanted: "Camp
Murphy" (11th Replacement Contingent Depot.), 1942 @ Melbourne Cricket Ground
Sir,
I am a researcher at the Library of the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria,
Australia. In 1942, units of the USAAF were stationed at the Melbourne Cricket
Ground, which they named "Camp Murphy". I believe that the site was
also referred to as the "11th Replacement Contingent Depot". I write
to you in the hope that, through your website, I might contact any USAAF veterans
who were stationed at Camp Murphy in '42, so that we can gather reminiscences
about their time in Melbourne. The Melbourne Cricket Ground hosted the 1956 Olympic
Games and is regarded as one of the great sporting stadiums of the world. As we
approach our 150th anniversary, we would like to know more about Colonel William
H. Murphy, after whom the USAAF named their Camp. The local papers mentioned only
that he died in Java on February 3, 1942, when his aircraft was attacked by Zeros.
Other than that, we know nothing, and would welcome any information about him
and the circumstances of his death. A photograph would be priceless to us! Here's
hoping someone out there can assist!

My name is Thomas
Edwards, aka Ed. I was stationed at Mactan Airfield, the Philippines from August
1966-November 1967. My unit was the 467th Combat Support Group, 8th Air Force.
I worked under TSgt. Richard Bennett, and Capt. Edward Murphy, Judge Advocate
General as an Administrative Legal Assistant. My commanding Officer was Lt. Estaquio
Guzman (Hawaii).
I shared a hutch with
William Barton (Dubuque, Iowa), Del Phynboh, Rick Thompson, Manuel Quinnonis,
Les Schweigart (somewhere around Scranton, PA), and Glen Magee (I think possibly
Mississippi). On July 4th of 1967, we made a sort of pact that we would all meet
for a reunion 50 years from that day. (I remember it well). That date is still
a ways off, but I would like to get in contact with any one of them.
However,
my quest is two-fold. Firstly, I would love to have this reunion, but, secondly
I have developed severe cervicle and lumbar disk disease, which my physicians
have said could possibly be a result of different agents that were used in that
area at the time. But without some kind of substantial evidence that it has also
effected others who were there at the time, I may not be able to submit it as
a service-connected-disability. It may not be service-connected, but I would like
to get in contact with any of these guys to see if they're experiencing anything
of the like. It might be a long shot, but I'm in dire straits. Contact me at:

just had a very successful reunion consisting of five former Mukdahan Airman.
These were:

We
have also located VERNON ROMSKOG, but he was unable to attend. We are searching

concern: Mr. James Koon died of lung cancer, Monday, October, 7, 2002.
Born
in Richland County, South Carolina, he was the son of the late John Koon and Carrie
Koon. He served approximately five years with the 8th Air Patrol in England. He
received an Honarable Discharge while serving in Amarillo in 1945 and is the recipient
of the Distinguished Flying Cross with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and other merit badges.

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Fighter/bomber, used extensley in ETO, during WW2.
I was a sheetmetal worker, repairing these fighters, starting in Dec. '43, southern
coast of England. I was in an MR&R unit(5man truck mobile repair unit. I was with
Hq&BaseSvSq, attached to the 440th AirSvSq. Thje Hq. unit were the technicans
repairing them. Our unit landes on Normandy June 11/44; was at St.Dezair,Fr. during
Battle of the Bulge. In July '44 was close to the air strike on St.Lo Fr. We went
through St.Lo the next day, & there were no building intact. We used every german
air strip, when the Germans retreagted.After Battle of the Bulge, we went to Leige,Belg.
March 1st 1/3 of us technicans were ytransfered into the infantry.Our whole organzation
were a mobile group. If you know anything about this organization, please let
me know. I heard that they were disbanded in April, 45, not sure.?

We were stationed in the town of Freizing, Germany in Bavaria. We were housed
in Vimy Kaserne. The station was about 17 Kliks outside of Munich, and our sister
base (which was close by) was in Erding. Some of the names that I remember are:

since USAF Hospital Clark played a strategic role in Operation Homecoming, the
bringing home of our POWs from Hanoi. While there have been reunions since, most
recently 20-22 June 2005 in Las Vegas for the entire Clark AFB populace, none
have been devoted to the Hospital Squadron alone. I have begun the research to
host the 1st USAF Hospital Clark reunion for the years leading up to and through
Operation Homecoming. This would be the years 1970-1973. IF you are interested

am looking for a reunion of all and/or anybody who served in the 926th AC&W Squadron
at Frobisher Bay at any time during its history from the early 1950's until its
eventual apparent closure after the 1960's. Our site apparently did remain around
until its eventual total demolition in the 1990's due to its deterioration and
environmental hazards and thus does seem to have an interesting history, My service
there was in 1956, but I believe that anyone who served in the squadron at anytime
during its history can relate well enough to it for an interesting reunion regardless
of what time period that they were there. (Remember SKIMO?) Also for anyone interested
